@paradewebiarme Also I kicked a superglued quarter off tha sidewalk with a Spinning Horse Kick And a flathead screwdriver, a rock on tha tip and a couple of woodchips to hold a circular woodchip in place that I rolled it off (hardware said that took about 1,000 psi.) it was simple, What kind of Capoeira should I get into? I remember seeing this stuff Only the Strong featuring Mark Dacascos and even though the actors wasn't 100% it was still amazing to watch with all the tv extra added to it and everything. The opening song always makes me think of Dance With Me, thats the opening song for the latin dances.

I think it's great that people are underestimating the usefulness of capoeira. After all, isn't that its motive, to deceive, and to confuse? It gives capoeira fighters the upper hand when the opponent is gloated with ego.

@apewings My point is that to GET to THIS level of mastery takes a huge amount of effort and even then its an extremely energy intensive venture, and its quite stylized even then. My point with Lateef too though for his end is that I can see that he drives his kicks hard and moves with power. Most capoeristas move like graceful dancers, and having sparred several they dont land hard even when they do land. I am betting guys like Lateef can drive a guy through the wall.

@Wiezah87 Though that's totally up to the local ranking system - which is not standardized. home.znet [dot] com/capoeira_list/systems.htm Some groups label white as a beginners color and use black for the mestre. ;) Hers is red I guess, a group that's close to where I live chose that color as a close second rank. Just a quick comment here...Capoeira does not utilize "belts" per se, rather, they utilize "cordoes" or "cordao" (cords/ropes) for their grading system. This separates them from traditional asian martial arts grading systems that use belts. Also, depending on what Capoeira group you train with dictates how fast you move up the grading system. Someone mentioned it takes 50 years to become Grao Mestre, which isn't necessarily true. There are Grao Mestres in some groups that are in their 40s.

Capoeira looks cool but in reality seems ineffective unless you stun your opponent early. All that dancing around is a waste of energy and eventually you will tire out giving your opponent the upper hand. This scene has a lot of editing and is not one continuous fight sequence.

@NachtCrus You should look into the history of Capoeira. If it was not effective (Which I can tell you from experience, it is.) than it would not have worked in all of the past instances. This is Capoeira Regional, which is more sport-like these days than Capoeira Angola. As for Tony Jaa, he is doing movie attacks. Because this is a movie. You can't judge a fighting style off of a movie in the first place. Also, Jaa does Muay Boran, not Muay Thai.

Capoeira seems pretty cool, but impractical.... i mean sure it is nice and all, but if you are thrown off balace... well the defense seems nonexistant... not tom mention the ridiculous amount of energy you expend with all that twirling, also, that was not muay thai, that was tkd/capoeira. i dont think capoeira is an actual real fighting style... not insulting it, it is very impressive, but i really doubt that it would go anywhere in combat sports either, its like a bladed fanin a movie, cool but

They wanted to make them think that it is one of the dances from africa, to confuse them, but at the same time they dance, they fight, and, you can see that is a powerfull fight on this video and in the history of Brazil.

@tramagacity Of course they wouldn't be invincible, but they wouldn't really be that easy to knock out, mestre's a pretty high rank regardless of flips and tricks, in actual contact the flips are generally left out so i know you don't have to be a flipping fucking master to be a mestre but you have to be recognized as one in the capoeira community around you, put all of this together and a guy that got knocked that easily doesn't seem weird to you?

@ForzaAquila No worries! Lots of people start off not even being able to do a cartwheel. Trust me! Although the acrobatic moves make the game look beautiful, capoeira is not ALL about that. Capoeira is highly adaptable and instructors can always modify things depending on your fitness and flexibility level. You might also try capoeira angola, which is much slower and more deliberate. It's also very beautiful, and a great way to get into capoeira if you're feeling intimidated.

the only thing that can ever really be too late to start is advanced acrobatic moves but not one sport altogether. you can even start low level gymnastics in mid twenties but you had better be flexible and well conditioned before starting :p

im not a researcher or a historian.But the little i know about caopeira's origins i learned when i attended a small presentation given by Mestre Cobra Mansa. And his opinion as an anthropologist and capoeira mestre is that capoeira can be divided into two main styles,the style that was brought from Angola,which has the same name as the country, and the style that developed in Brazil,but i cant remember the name.The latter one is more "jumpy".The first one is said to be more realistic for a fight

Capoeira is purely Brazilian. Capoeira is a word from Tupi language (native brazilian indians), which means vegetation that grows after putting a forest down. It was never born in Africa. It was created here in Brazil by african slaves. Try travelling to Angola and asking if they know Capoeira. We have 2 styles, Capoeira Angola and Regional. What they are doing right now isn't Capoeira in my mind, it is simply what is called 'tricking'. Perhaps they may do a couple Capoeira techniques every once in awhile but these are short clips are tricks, not actual Capoeira.
